A year after the end of the Six Nations, Ireland is still reeling from the damage done by the Rugby World Cup, and has been without a Top 14 team since 2016.
Now the new year brings with it an opportunity for the game to rebuild.
The game was in trouble with the World Cup and the subsequent relegation of some clubs and a new Rugby World Cups in 2018 and 2019, but with the new Rugby Champions Cup set to take place in 2020, it seems that things have finally turned around.
In an interview with the Irish Times, Dubliner, Rory McElroy, who has been one of the key players in the development of the game in Ireland, is set to play his part in a major overhaul of the Irish game.
His new team, the Terenure, is the most talented team in the country, having won the World Series title in 2018, and the team’s captain, the prolific Tommy Bowe, is back to make a significant impact.
“The biggest change we’ve made to the squad is Rory McEyr.
He’s been a big influence on our game and has had a huge impact.
He has a great feel for the team and the players he’s got, and he’s also been in charge of the Ireland Under-20s for the last couple of years,” said McElry.
“I’ve had a lot of time to look at other players, but the biggest difference I’ve seen in Rory is his leadership.
He is one of those guys that you look up to.”
It’s not about what Rory’s got; it’s about what he can do.
I’ve always said that I’ve got to have a few guys that can do that, but it’s a little bit different now that he’s in charge.
“A year ago, there were reports of tensions between McEirry and the current team, with rumours of a rift between the captain and other players.
However, McElrey was confident that things would be different this time around.”
This is the biggest change that I can see.
Rory has been a huge part of the success of the team, he’s a huge personality in the squad and he is a big part of what we’re doing, so it’s not just about him; it goes a lot further than that,” McElries said.”
I think we’ve got some of the best players in Europe and the world right now, and I think it’s just a matter of putting those players in position to perform and being able to have those types of players in front of the fans.
“They can have a big impact on the team.
They can bring that energy to the game.
They don’t need to be a specialist or specialist players.
They need to bring that attitude and that belief and that determination.”
If we can do those things, we can go through whatever it is.
“McElroy’s comments echo those of his former captain and new coach, Joe Schmidt, who took charge of Ireland last year and made a big step in the right direction.”
“The new coaching staff have worked extremely hard to put together a team that can win the World Champions Cup, so I’m really excited about the new challenge.””
For the past four years, Ireland have struggled to secure a top-four finish in the Six States and in recent seasons have struggled financially, with the national team only making a single appearance in the Rugby Championship.”
